Science Experiment

No Leak Plastic bag

Today Mr Power demonstrated to the Tui team this amazing science experiment using a plastic bag and skewers. The plastic bags were full of water but when they were pierced with a skewer, surprisingly the water did not gush out. Why?

Well Luke, Helene, Estelle and Tom set out to find out why this was so.

Luke & Helene: "The little polymers of the plastic bag stretch out and stretch back in and suck onto the thing you have pushed in so the water doesn't come out."

Tom & Estelle: "The zip lock plastic bag was made out of polymers. Think of the polymers as long strands of freshly cooked spaghetti. The tip of the skewer can easily slip between and push apart the flexible strands of spaghetti, and the the flexible property helps to form a temporary seal against the edge of the skewer.

Tino Pai guys. You've done a great job of explaning why.
